College Life and Drinking Responsibly

College is one of those times in life that people always say you’ll never forget. Between football games, late-night study sessions, hanging out with friends, and, yeah, the occasional party, it’s a time packed with experiences. For a lot of students, drinking ends up being part of that mix. And while there’s nothing wrong with having fun if you’re of age, it’s also really important to talk about the responsibility that comes with it especially when it comes to driving.

Here’s the reality: drunk driving is one of the leading causes of accidents and deaths in the U.S., and people our age are at the highest risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers between the ages of 21–24 are the most likely group to be involved in fatal drunk driving crashes. That’s us, college-aged students. It’s not some distant problem; it’s right here in our age range, and it’s happening more often than a lot of people realize.

To put it into perspective, about 37 people die every single day because of drunk driving. That’s more than an entire classroom of people gone, just because someone thought they were “okay to drive.” On top of that, over a million people are arrested for DUIs every year in the U.S. And that number doesn’t even account for the ones who make it home without getting caught.

In the state of Georgia alone, there are 26.1 per 100,000 residents in a drunk driving incident. That puts the state of Georgia as the sixth state with the most dui’s.

Now, let’s talk about what a DUI actually means for a college student. It’s not just about a night in jail or paying a fine. A DUI can cost thousands of dollars when you add up legal fees, insurance hikes, and court-ordered classes. It can also follow you on your record, which makes it harder to get jobs, internships, or even housing opportunities later on. If you’re planning to work in fields like education, government, or business management, something like that can close doors you didn’t even realize would be affected.

But the scariest part isn’t the money or the career setbacks, it’s the possibility of hurting someone else or yourself. Imagine being the reason a friend doesn’t make it home. Or worse, a stranger on the road who had nothing to do with your decision. That’s the kind of weight you carry forever, and no night out is worth that.

The good news is, drinking responsibly doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s really about planning ahead and looking out for each other. If you’re going out, figure out your ride before the drinks start flowing. Have a designated driver, grab an Uber, or just stay over at a friend’s place. If you’re the one hosting, don’t let your friends drive home if they’ve had too much to offer the couch instead. And honestly, sometimes being the friend who speaks up is the most important role of all.

College is supposed to be about learning, growing, and making memories you’ll want to tell later, not ones you’ll regret. Drinking responsibly doesn’t kill the fun, it makes sure the fun doesn’t end in tragedy. At the end of the day, it’s about respecting yourself, your future, and the people around you.

So yeah, go out, enjoy yourself, make memories, but make sure those memories don’t come with consequences you can’t take back.
