Big news for the University of West Georgia! The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded UWG a grant to help promote safer roads and stronger communities. It’s a big win for the university and for everyone who drives, walks, or bikes around campus and Carrollton.
The GOHS gives out these grants to support programs that focus on things like distracted driving, seatbelt use, drunk driving prevention, and pedestrian safety. Basically, anything that helps keep people safe on the road.
With this new grant, UWG has a chance to build programs, do more outreach, and get students involved in making a real difference.
What I love about this is that it’s not just about research or numbers, it’s about people. It’s about making sure students get home safe, families aren’t losing loved ones in preventable crashes, and the community has the tools to stay aware and educated. It’s the kind of project that shows how much impact we can have when education meets public service.
For me, this kind of news feels personal in a way. As someone who gained their bachelors degree in mass communications and is currently obtaining their masters in public administration, to see things that combine communication, community, and purpose.
A grant like this does exactly that, it gives us a way to take what we learn in class and turn it into something that helps others in real life.
I also love the idea of students getting involved, maybe through campus events, public awareness campaigns, or even using media and storytelling to spread the message about safe driving. As someone who’s passionate about connecting with people, that’s the kind of work that really excites me.
Whether it’s new safety programs, community partnerships, or creative outreach projects, it’s awesome to see the university taking steps that truly make a difference.
Here’s to safer roads, stronger communities, and another reason to be proud of being part of the UWG family.
