Wolves Men’s Basketball Breaks Five Game Losing Streak!

`1/19/2017 | Nicholas McGahee

The University of West Georgia Wolves won an important game Thursday night. After losing 5 straight games, the Wolves scored a crucial 87-83 win over Union, pushing them back to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in conference.

The Wolves were generating points all over the hardwood tonight with five players scoring over 10 points. Christian Houston went 5-8 had the most for the Wolves with 14 points. Willie Evans and Stephaun Branch both had 13, Cameron Blakely had 12 and was 4-4 from three-point land. Shannon Fowler was a menace in the paint for the Wolves, he had 10 points and Aren Ulmer had 10 points as well. The Wolves had an outstanding 50.9% FG and an even better 54.5% 3FG.

The Wolves started hot right out of the gate, with Stephaun Branch taking the reins scoring 11 points and an emphatic dunk that sparked the Wolves to go on a 15-0 run at one point. Shannon Fowler had a massive dunk of his own to go along with his 6 point half. Cameron Blakely only shot the ball twice, but ended up with 6 points by shooting threes, not missing to add. The first half ended with the Wolves on top, 41-34.

The second half started sluggish allowing Union to close the gap in the score and eventually take a 57-56 lead halfway through the second half. From that point on it was a shootout with both teams scoring on almost every possession. Tray Boyd and Jarad Scott were on fire in the second half for Union scoring 28 points between the two of them, Boyd finished with 25 and Scott finished with 22. Eventually, the Wolves took control of the game with 2 minutes remaining to go up by 5 and keep the game at 2 possessions for the remainder. Union had to start forcing fouls, but the Wolves had solid shooting at the Free-Throw line all night with 84.62% and it didn’t let up as the Wolves were an almost perfect 5-6 within the last 30 seconds to secure an 87-83 victory.

The Wolves will be at home on Saturday to play Christian Brothers at 4PM at The Coliseum.
