West Georgia Wolves Athletics -Armah,Deese earn top honors at WESPY Awards Night

Carrollton, GAAlex Armah and Anna Leah Deese took home top honors at the 2017 WESTPY Awards this Thursday, as the University of West Georgia department of athletics handed out end of the year awards at the annual WESTPY Awards Banquet in the Campus Center Ballroom. For the fourth straight year, Haven West was the sponsor of the night, and this year Dine West was this year’s meal sponsor. A new host guided the attendees through this year’s event, as CBS46’s Fred Kalil was the emcee for the evening.

Deese and Armah became the fourth recipients of the title of Mr. and Miss Wolf, which goes to the top all-around athlete at West Georgia each year. The criteria for Mr. and Miss Wolf includes recognition for on the field play, participation in community service and academics. Both athletes were at UWG for at least four years and had an array of awards throughout their careers. Deese was a three-time captain on the women’s soccer team and earned All-Conference honors in two of her four years on the field. In addition, she maintained a 3.83 GPA in her time at UWG. Armah was a three-time All-Gulf South Conference honoree and this past year became the first position player in GSC history to earn All-GSC honors on both sides of the ball.

Dylan Donahue took home two awards for the second-straight year, winning the Alpha for Best Male Clutch Performance of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year. Donahue and Armah were both in their respective NFL Rookie Camps after becoming the first two players ever selected in the NFL Draft earlier this month and were unable to attend the event. Donahue was the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus First Team All-American at the conclusion of the 2016 football season. He and Franziska Bremm became the first athletes at UWG to win four Alphas in their time at UWG, as she also won two awards for the second-straight year.

Bremm’s path to four awards was similar to Donahue’s, as she won the Alpha for Best Female Clutch Performance of the Year and the Female Athlete of the Year. Bremm was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year at the conclusion of the women’s golf season. During the regular season, she won the individual title at three different tournaments and had nine top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments played.

Aysha Harris, a sophomore on the women’s basketball squad, was another big winner on the night, taking home two awards at the ceremony, as she won Best Comeback Athlete of the Year and Women’s Play of the Year. Harris averaged 11.9 points per game in 2016-17, helping lead her Wolves to a host spot on Super Tuesday in the Gulf South Conference tournament. This came one year after being forced to sit out the 2015-16 season with a knee injury. She also buried two free-throws in the waning seconds of that Super Tuesday contest against North Alabama, sending the Wolves to the GSC semifinals.

Football took home the most awards on the night with seven, followed by women’s golf with five. For women’s golf, that included the Team of the Year and Head Coach of the Year awards, as the women’s golf team won the Gufl South Conference Golf Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional, both for the first time in school history. Softball and Women’s basketball each won four awards on the night.

In addition to the awards, UWG Athletics had the Win With the Wolves sweepstakes, giving out prizes from an array of corporate partners, including: Tailgate Guys, Carroll EMC, Georgia Power Company, Chick fil A, The Atlanta Braves, and The Atlanta Falcons.
