University Police Welcome Chief Tom Saccenti – The WOLF News

By Bode Brooks, The WOLF News Director

The University of West Georgia held a brief press conference Tuesday to welcome the new chief of the University Police Department, Tom Saccenti. Saccenti is the former chief of police at Furman University in Greenville, SC, and has also served as police chief at Marietta College, and the Pioneer Police Department. Saccenti also founded the National Association of Campus Safety Administrators, which provides officers access to training events and certification programs. Saccenti is succeeding Tom Mackel, who served 25+ years as head of UWG’s police force.

Saccenti said he picked UWG for three reasons: leadership, supervisor support, and the men and women of UPD. Saccenti described the selection process as unique, going into detail with how much he interacted with the police force during the interview process.

“I could see and experience the police department, so they could see and experience me,” said Saccenti. Before any job offer was made, Saccenti said it was the officers who provided their input first, about who they wanted in the office.

“Just as much as I picked this college to work at, they picked me,” said Saccenti.
