Tornado Strikes Carrollton – The WOLF News

By Bode Brooks, The WOLF News Director

Carrollton was slammed midday Monday by severe thunderstorms and an EF-1 tornado leaving thousands without power and multiple major roads closed late into the night. The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that a tornado touched down in Carrollton just a block away from UWG’s main campus. The tornado practically destroyed Fire Station No. 22 on Brumbelow road when 90 MPH winds tore the roof off the building. Minor damage was also caused to nearby apartment complexes and UWG’s Cole Field sustained heavy wind damage to its fencing. Multiple trees in and around campus were blown down damaging some homes and vehicles. Portions of Alabama St., Maple St., and Highway 27 were closed due to downed trees and broken power lines and remained closed until early Tuesday morning. Up to 20 tornadoes reportedly touched down in Georgia on Monday.

Despite the severe weather, the University of West Georgia remained in session for the duration of Monday’s storm. UWG’s statement on the weather caused a fiery reaction from students on social mediaPower was restored to most of campus shortly after the storm, but Greek Village residents remained without power until approximately 8 AM Tuesday morning.

Another round of severe weather is expected on Wednesday with damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes expected to hit Carrollton and much of central and south Georgia by midday.
