Senior year: Limitless Possibilities

By Jessica Jervis-Viville

Ah, Senior Year
I’ve been waiting for this moment since my freshman year. It’s the last
few steps towards the finish line. My college career has never been a race, but rather a crawl
towards the future.
I’ve learned so much in these short few years. I couldn’t possibly share all of that with
you, but here’s what I think is vitally important.
Be Yourself. I’ve seen so many people come to college and become different people,
because that’s what they felt like they needed to do. They quickly discovered that being someone
else doesn’t enhance your life. Embrace who you are. You are going to change. It’s called
growth, but at your core remain the person that you were always meant to be.
Celebrate the Small Things. Look. You are going to mess up. You are going to take
some losses in college. There are things that you can’t control. You’re human. Celebrate when
you get the B on the test, even though it’s not an A. You studied and this is a result from that
studying. You should still celebrate even if it wasn’t what you expected.
Have Fun! Yes, you need to study. Go to class to be successful, but you also need to
enjoy your college experience. Take a break sometimes. You could go to a concert, eat at a new
restaurant you’ve never be too, check out your local attractions, or even go to the Zoo! Just
remember to get out of the study zone sometimes.
Make Friends.  I know you’re here to learn, but it’s important to make these connections
too. Your classmates could be your co-workers in the future, or even the key to getting your
dream job. Make these connections now, or you’re going to regret it in the future.
The Future is Now. Everything you are doing right now will impact your future in some
way. I used to think that I have four years before graduation until having to worry about finding a
job. Now, I’m less than four months away from that cap and grown. I’ve taken baby steps to
ensure that I’m ready for that job marketplace. Here are some ways you can too: Apply for
internships, join a professional organization, attend networking events, and always keep an
updated resume. Preparing now will only make your future that much brighter.

I’ve been there. I’ve been the person studying in the library until 2 AM. The girl who put
way too much on her plate, and then felt completely overwhelmed. The only person in the class
who didn’t understand the material. It’s a struggle, but it’s a beautiful struggle.

I understand that college is stressful, frustrating, and overwhelming. It’s also been the
most rewarding experience of my life. I’ve grown into the person I’ve never expected to be.
Dream big.
The future is now.
You are capable.
