With the first game against Fort Valley State less than a week away, the West Georgia football team is finishing up their preparations for the 2017 football season. The team is currently under the tutelage of new head coach David Dean who had been a co-offensive coordinator with Georgia Southern for one year, and a head coach at rival Valdosta State from 2007 to 2015. He lead the Blazers to two national championships (2007 and 2012) and an overall record of 79-27, a 75% win rate.

The Wolves have named Redshirt Sophomore Willie Candler as the starting quarterback to begin the season. Candler was redshirted for the entire 2015 season but was able to see quite a bit of action in the 2016 season and even started the last four games. He ended the season 55 of 86 and passed for 10 touchdowns. Candler will be getting some big help from Junior two-time All-Conference Running Back Devontae Jackson. Jackson has spent the past two years in the lime light as he has been a focal point of the Wolves offense. He comes into the 2017 season with 232 carries for 1544 yards, averaging 6.65 yards per carry; combine that with his 13 rushing touchdowns he will be a staple in the diet that is the Wolves offense. Even with the loss of Qa Walker to Murray State, the receiving core will still be a good mixture of DeNiko Carter, Thomas Lester, K.J. Parmer, and Brandon Walton. Carter will most likely be the go to receiver this year. Last year he had 22 catches for 413 yards and 6 touchdowns, and he averaged 18 yards per catch.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves have to replace one of the most dominate defensive players in the programs history with Dylan Donahue moving on to the New York Jets. Donahue played in 11 games last year and finished the season with 67 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. He also forced 2 fumbles and recovered another. However, The Wolves will have plenty of talented defenders this year to step in and anchor the defense. Including Junior Corner Jakyron Yound, Senior Safety Zed Brown, and Junior Defensive Lineman Cordarro Stoute. All three started 11 games for the Wolves last year and will be looked at to step up and take hold of the Wolves defense.

The First game of the season will be Thursday, August 31 vs Fort Valley State. The Nighthawks were 5-6 and won the southern intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. This game will be used to gauge the Wolves and see what they have prepared for the upcoming 2017 season.
