Lights, Camera, Action: 10$ Movie Pass Causes Controversy

MoviePass a subscription-based movie service, is now offering unlimited movies monthly for $10 a month. They made the announcement Aug. 15. Previously, customers had to pay upwards of $50 to access this pass.Β  This is how it works: Customers sign up for a monthly plan of $10, and they can see unlimited movies for the month at participating theatres

Of course with every great deal there is fine print:

  • You can only watch one 2D movie a day.
  • You can only see a movie title once.
  • You can only see a movie every 24 Hours.

Despite MoviePass’s conscious effort to make movie-going more affordable there have been some harsh critics. These critics include the movie giant: AMC. In 2014 MoviePass signed a contract with AMC, when their movie ticket prices were $35. Now AMC has threatened to sue MoviePass for violating this contract.

β€œWhile AMC is not opposed to subscription programs generally, the one envisioned by MoviePass is not one AMC can embrace. We are actively working now to determine whether it may be feasible to opt out and not participate in this shaky and unsustainable program,” said AMC in a statement.

Even though AMC is considering dissolving their contract with AMC. It is still accepted at several participating theaters, and hopes to continue to build strong partnerships in the future.

Subscriptions service have become the latest wave. AMC is either preventing future growth in the company, or making a smart, logic, business decision. While MoviePass has currently all eyes on them with these latest announcement.
