Fergie’s “Rendition” of The Star-Spangled Banner

By Mac Benefield

Personally, I’m all for new renditions of songs. However, “The Star-Spangled Banner” isn’t one to mess with. Sure, covers and newer, more updated versions of songs is one thing. But, when you mess with one of our nation’s timeless pieces? It’s best to either keep it traditional as it should be or leave it alone.

Don’t get me wrong; I love Fergie. Most of my burnt CDs back in the day were filled with Black Eyed Peas tracks, as well as Fergie’s solo work. Jamming out to these tracks with my friends in the car, sunroof open, was one of those moments back in middle school and high school that I will cherish forever. I still adore Fergie as an artist, but, this goes down in the same category as Mariah Carey’s awful lip syncing New Year’s Eve fiasco: just sorry.

With that being said, I admire Fergie for accepting the backlash with a positive attitude and all-in-all admitting that the crowd she was trying to reach was way farther than arm’s length and turning the other cheek. We all make mistakes and nobody’s perfect…just don’t mess with a song that symbolizes America.
