Almiron out for three weeks

By Nick McGahee

With Sunday’s announcement that Miguel Almiron will be out with a left hamstring injury, Atlanta United will look to fill that gap so they don’t have to let up the pressure on the attacking side of the ball. Miguel or “Miggy” as he is called by his team mates, pulled up on his hamstring early in their matchup with Montreal Impact on Sunday 10 minutes into the game, he was pulled a minute later. Almiron was subbed out for Julian Gressel. Almiron spent the rest of the 80 minutes on the sidelines watching as he clearly had pain on his face. Atlanta still ended up winning the match 2-0 with a blistering 24-yard upper corner shot from Tito Villalba (28’) and a nice redirect from Jeff Larentowicz of the cross from Yamil Asad (73’).
Almiron was unable to give a quote for he was rushed of the field after the match had ended.

Monday at 11am, Atlanta United released a statement saying that Miguel Almiron would be out “for no less than 3 weeks.” Miggy is expected to miss the next 4 games for Atlanta as well as miss the next 2 World Cup Qualifying matches for Paraguay. This is a big blow for Atlanta United because they lose the speed of Almiron. Almiron was in the top 10 in the MLS in terms of speed, acceleration, and agility. Almiron had started in 27 games (second most on the team) and played in ALL 29. He has also had 12 goals and 9 assists, helping Atlanta to their league leading 123 goals this season.

With this loss of power in the midfield Atlanta will turn to Julian Gressel to step up and fill his shoes. Gressel, whom does not have the same speed as Almiron does bring his own unique set of skills to the table for this team, especially on the cross where he is known to fly to the fall for some impressive headers. Gressel, who is only 24, has started 19 games this year, spread out across the attack line for Atlanta. He had 3 goals and 9 assists. He also is one of the leading candidates for Rookie of the Year in Major League Soccer.
